Looking Back to Move Forward: State of the Beauty Industry at the Start of 2020

Now is the time to truly explore the future of beauty. We’ve all made our trend forecasts for the New Year and had a good look back at 2019. Today, we have a chance to see the future of our industry unfold in real time.

Recent Acquisitions in Hair Care, Color Cosmetics, and Skincare

As 2020 gets underway, big changes are defining the brands’ space. Olaplex, a genuinely innovative hair care brand, is under new ownership. Kylie Cosmetics belongs to Coty. Estée Lauder has a K-Beauty brand in its portfolio for the first time with Dr Jart+. L’Oréal has cut a deal to develop a beauty line with Prada.

Beauty Ingredient Makers are Making Deals

And that’s not all that’s new for 2020. On the supply side, International Flavor and Fragrances (IFF) is now a part of DuPont. Clariant and Plant Advanced Technologies are collaborating on new ingredient development. Nestle Skin Health is now Galderma, thanks to a global consortium of investors that bought the business away from Nestle. And all those deals took place near the end of 2019.

2020 Begins with M&A Activity for Product and Packaging Makers

Already this year, we’ve seen P&G acquire the women’s body care and grooming brand Billie. Coty has announced a new CEO to lead both the makeup and skincare brands founded by Kylie Jenner. And the packaging company TricorBraun just acquired a ridged personal care packaging design and distribution business called Packaging Solutions Inc.
